Who is at
fault here?
Okay, so
this accident didn’t
involve a self-driving car, although the car was technically driving itself
when the accident occurred earlier today in Manhattan, New York. What happened
was that a woman was hit after a C5 Corvette owner started his car via
the remote start function on his key fob. The car was apparently in gear so
it shot out of a parking garage when the 5.7-liter V8 engine started, crushing
an unknown woman. The Corvette C5 was built from 1997 until 2004 and never came
with an auto-start function on the key fob.
This means that the
owner probably installed an aftermarket system, which would likely not have the
same safeguards as a factory unit. Since the Corvette was a manual, a faulty
aftermarket system could feasibly bypass the clutch interlock switch. With 345
horsepower on the base model C5, there was enough
power to get the 3,300-pound car moving even at idle. The unnamed owner of
the yellow Corvette blames the parking attendant who had just retrieved the
Vette. They think that the attendant never put the parking brake on, but the
attendant denies this. The woman was sent to the hospital, although there was
no mention of injuries. Who do you think is at fault here?
